Sightseeing Spots: Kakunodate Area
The Hifuri Kamakura (City-designated intangible folk cultural asset)
Splendid rings of fire dance in the snow, making the festival a mystic beauty. In recent years, the show is available on the day before opening. On the evening of Septemeber 14, the festival starts in each chonai.
In a Hifuri dance, a meter-long rope is tied to a sack of coals. Then, fire is set to the sack, and the performer holds the rope and swings it around his/her body.
It is one of the lunar new year events. The sacred fire drives out the bad luck from the rice fields, and people wish for the health of their family and safety throughout the year.
