Shiraiwa-yaki Ware

Shiraiwa-yaki was started in 1771 by Unshichi Matsumoto, a masterless samurai from Soma. He left the land 5 years later, but his disciples continued their work, and there were 6 kilns working when the art was most actively practiced. The heavy and stately products were given to the lords of the area, while at the same time spreading within and without the prefecture for daily use. But with the earthquake in 1896, and the changing times, the mountain was eventually closed.

It was 80 years later, that the Shiraiwa ware once again appeared in this land. With advice from Living National Treasure Shoji Hamada and his second son Shinsaku Hamada, devoted people have succeeded in reviving the art, and today new works of unique taste are being produced.
